Choosing the six tips of 2009 was a difficult task. It had been just weeks since Lehman Brothers collapsed and investors did not know where the next shock was going to come from. Even the gold price, which typically outperforms in a time of crisis, had slumped. Six stocks were chosen as a balanced portfolio for troubled times. The portfolio was supposed to be conservative, aiming to protect wealth in the event of further upsets and give upside should markets improve. The selections were a success and are up an average of 56pc, compared with the FTSE 100 up 22pc.
